Brionvega RR226 audio system hits the market

Ξ December 8th, 2008 | → | ∇ Gadgets |

We flagged up the re-appearance of the classic Brionvega RR226 audio system a few weeks back, adding that there was little chance of this every hitting the stores. We were wrong.

Yes, dragged kicking and screaming from the swinging sixties, the Castiglioni-designed RR226 (formerly RR126) is back in our living rooms, with a couple of concessions to the modern era, namely a CD and DVD player, which slot subtly in on the top. Aside from that, this is Austin Powers heaven, with an old school vinyl deck (33/45), built-in amp and radio, those ’smiley face’ controls and best of all, the ‘flip’ speakers, which can swing to the side or be used on top. If it was any more 60s, it would be wearing a mini skirt and driving a Mini.

The Conran Shop is selling it right now, priced at a hefty £4,495. Considering it lacks DAB, internet radio, any kind of modern-day connectivity, HD video or even a cassette deck, that’s some price to demand. But the RR226 is a design classic, so just keep telling yourself you’re investing in an antique, that might ease the pain of shelling out the cost of a decent secondhand motor or a long break in the Caribbean.
