Over drinks yesterday, my friend shared an insight. Thanks to my hangover, I’ll have to paraphrase everything:
Him: “Would you know how well retailers did during Black Friday?”
Me: “Not yet, I think it’s too early to tell. I’m sure a report will come out soon.”
Him: “Well, all I’m saying is that if people don’t buy this year, even with the low prices, things must be really bad.”
Me: “From what I’ve seen, things look good. Did you read about that Wal-Mart temp employee killed in a buyer stampede?”
Him: “Oh yeah… so there were lots of buyers right?”
Me: “Well if that case is any indicator, yes. You need lots of people to trample someone to death.”

Even as a manly-man who’s never read the Twilight series, geeksugar’s feature on Bella’s upgraded geek set is worth the read. It asks “Should Book Technology be Updated for the Movie Version?”, a question that’s truly relevant to geeks, a wide-reaching demographic that ultimately, loves analyzing the most mundane of details.
Turns out that in the original book, vampire-loving lead Bella relied on a desktop computer to gain more information about Edward the pasty pretty boy—and she didn’t own a cellphone. That changed in the movie when she did her research on a black Macbook, and kept in touch through her Nokia phone.
Personally, it really doesn’t matter. Commenter “bowwowza” does have a point (”ya gotta keep up with the times for the movie or it looks old”). But in the greater scheme of things, I’d rather watch a movie that presents a well-developed cast of characters and a compelling story. It’s really more about the narrative, rather than what gadgets our heroes are using.
Story- and character-wise, Twilight quite honestly fails to provide. At least it’s a great way to show a lady-friend how much you care about her interests—though she’ll be the first to admit the franchise is only good for romantic thrills. Now she’ll return the favor come Star Trek.

A group of developers, led by someone using the handle “planetbeing,” have produced a method to load Linux 2.6’s kernel to the iPhone. The hack is supported on all generations of the Apple iPhone and the first generation of the iPod Touch. According to the announcement, however “many drivers are still missing, but it’s enough that a real alternative operating system is running on the iPhone.”
According to the post the following are completed: Framebuffer driver, Serial driver, Serial over USB driver, Interrupts, MMU, and Clock, etc. Items still in progress include: Read/Write NAND support, wireless LAN, touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, baseband support.
You can see a video demonstration.
There are some instructions and a download, but they are not for the inexperienced.
It’s clear that this port of Linux is in its infancy and not of much use to most iPhone users. Above all there is no phone support in this port so you’ll end up with an iPhone that won’t make calls, etc.

Having a hard time looking for an iPhone or iPod touch app that suits your category and price-point needs? Stored Apps attempts to catalog all the apps in the iTunes Store and make available as a searchable and filterable database. Search results provide a direct link to each app’s iTunes Store page.
Looking for free apps? Games? Just click on the filter tabs on top. Problem is, the site isn’t working properly; some features are not quite 100%. So here’s to hoping that the people behind the site, from somewhere in the Philippines, get their act together soon. And of course, I wonder how Apple will react to this.

Great job America! Retailers become generous (or “generous”) for Black Friday and this is what happens? You’ve just played out Lord of the Flies for the whole world to see. And for what? Cheaper TVs to see grown men bang each other at even better detail? Computers to download porn?
First off, over at a Toys R Us in Palm Desert, bad blood between two groups of shoppers led to a gunfight that left 2 dead. Now it isn’t clear if these events are tied to Black Friday (in fact Toys R Us came out with a statement implying such to cover their ass), but the timing of the shooting isn’t just a mere coincidence, no? Next, an employee of the Wal-Mart Valley Stream outlet died during the 5am Black Friday store-opening stampede. The ugly mob smashed through windows, injuring four other people (including a woman 8 months pregnant) and “sending others scurrying atop vending machines to avoid the horde.” The poor fellow’s fellow employees had to fight their way through to rescue their doomed colleague from the crush. Worse, the crowd even stepped over some cops arriving on the scene trying to give the temp worker some CPR. Oh well, at least you can expect the Damours—family of said victim—to win a healthy settlement from Wal-Mart, especially after the grief caused by people screaming “I’ve been on line since Friday Morning” while the area was being cleared. Based on these new accounts, maybe stores should start providing personnel with guns. After all, guns are intimidating enough to keep the discount-starved wolves in line. It really was a Black Friday, folks.

All is not well with the MacBook. Users have reported that display problems have reared their ugly heads and won’t go away. Either the screen itself is failing or the graphics card is. Regardless, it’s pretty bad. A number of users on the Apple Support forums are reporting a

Each end of the year brings us list after list of things that defined whatever category the list is based on. Since we’re focused on gadgets, here are the top 10 devices that made Wired forget 2008. I’m quoting number 10 because it’s something we featured a while back:

The number of undocumented new features in iPhone OS 2.2 is small relative to some other releases, which were accompanied by skimpy release notes. Among the few niceties discovered so far:
Mail rendering improvements Several users have reported enhanced readability of HTML messages in Mail.app under the new release. One iPhone Atlas reader writes:
“In the past, many html-formatted messages would have the unpleasant tendency to appear in my iPhone with fonts much too small to be viewable on the iPhone’s screen, requiring irritating horizontal swipes. Since the 2.2 upgrade, however, I’ve noticed that Mail - after briefly showing the original message for a fraction of a second - automatically changes the font size and formatting of those messages, and makes them completely readable. I noticed this in the daily Tech Bulletins I get from IHT.com, for example, among other sites. A very welcome improvement indeed. Kudos, Apple!”
Emebdded YouTube Playability indicator The ability to see graphic indicators of embedded YouTube content in Safari on the iPhone has existed for several OS iterations. These graphics can be clicked, launching the YouTube application. which may or may not playback the video, dependent on whether or not the video has been encoded for the iPhone.
Under OS 2.2, however, the graphic indicates whether or not the YouTube video is playable.
One iPhone Atlas reader writes:
“On web pages that have embedded YouTube videos, the frame now tells you in advance whether the movie is playable on the iPhone’s YouTube app. If it isn’t playable, you’ll see only a gray frame with a play button and a slash through it. If it is, you see the movie and a play button, as normal.
“Unfortunately, the same can’t be said when trying to stream video podcasts. When you try this with an incompatible podcast (like ABC’s Barack Obama videos), you have to connect and start downloading before a message comes up and tells you you can’t play it.”
Slide-deletion for podcasts In addition to podcasts now being available for download in the iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular networks), iPhone OS 2.2 adds the ability to swipe-delete podcasts.
One iPhone Atlas reader writes:
“After updating to FW 2.2 I can now delete audio podcasts by sliding your finger across it and press delete. I believe this was restricted to video podcasts before 2.2, but not 100% sure.”
If you’ve discovered any other undocumented iPhone OS 2.2 features, please let us know.
