Sharp shows off 52-inch solar-powered LCD TV

We’re all for greener technology, but there seems to be more than the occasional flaw with this Sharp 52-inch solar-powered LCD TV.

It certainly isn’t the principle, the thought of a large backlit LCD screen powered by natural resources is pretty much impossible to argue against. But in practice, how much direct sun would you get in an average living room? And would you really slap an extra solar panel on the side of the house just to power the telly?

It’s not a small panel either - just compare the size of the panel with the size of the screen. And if there isn’t a battery onboard, you just might miss those crucial X-Factor results if a cloud happens to float by (or night falls). Not good.

Yet, despite all that, we’re willing this thing to work. The thought of all-day TV viewing without a dent in the ever-increasing electric bill sounds far too good to be true. Prove us wrong Sharp - and sooner rather than later.
