SEGA Vision: SEGA’s long-awaited return to the hardware market?

Ξ October 6th, 2008 | → | ∇ Gadgets |

SEGA’s back! Back in the hardware biz that is. Or rather, there’s a SEGA branded gadget that is heading to Europe in 2009 and has the ability to play games!

Before you get too excited though, you should know the following: this is not a portable Dreamcast. SEGA Vision is not a successor to the GameGear either. It is not a PSP-killer. It is a fairly dubious Portable Media Player. The gaming capabilities are basically limited to Java titles. And SEGA’s only real involvement is to let a Chinese PMP-maker squander a once great hardware brand name.

Then again, who’s to say this won’t be a great gadget? It does have a fairly impressive wealth of features. These include a camera that’ll snap stills and videos. There’s also an integrated TV tuner, a digital music player and video player (although all it seems to be compatible with so far is MP4 vids).

The other eyebrow raiser is the book reader function. But we doubt there’s an E-ink display on there, so dedicated eBook readers aren’t going to be too worried.

And then there’s the design. Obviously we can’t tell much from a low-quality YouTube video (although that itself speaks volumes), but it does look tackier than a nodding Jesus dashboard ornament.

In the end, there is only one cheap, multifunction gadget with loose pretentions of being a gaming device that should be concerned by SEGA’s’ return to the hardware fray… the Gizmondo 2.
