Microsoft shows off Windows 7 operating system

Vista is still fresh and XP has had a new lease of life via the netbook, but that’s not stopped Microsoft from introducing a new operating system - Windows 7.

We can hear you screaming in anger now, but don’t despair, Microsoft claims Windows 7 is compatible with the same hardware, applications and device drivers as Windows Vista, so your software investments are safe.

As an added bonus Microsoft says its new OS will work better with a wide range of gadgetry and networked devices. That new look should win fans too, especially the Mac-like use of icons on the bottom bar. And the touch screen option will certainly work well on laptops - just as long as you’ve got clean hands.

Incidentally, the whole thing is said to work on netbooks - we very much like the sound of that. And for your mobile workers, Microsoft is producing lightweight next-generation Office products too. That means you can access, create, edit, share and collaborate on documents online via all major web browsers. For a ’subscription’ anyway. Come on, who do you think this is? Google?

A full beta version will be available early next year, with the full product not likely until the summer. But you can expect to hear much more about Windows 7 before then.
