HMV unveils ‘next-generation’ shopping experience

Leading UK entertainment retailer HMV has announced plans for one of its ‘next-generation’ stores to be opened in White City, London.

So what are next-generation HMV stores all about? Wispy fog, teleporters and a large selection of Star Trek DVDs? Well, no.

HMV’s next-generation stores will instead be focusing on digital music, providing customers with interactive digital kiosks that allow them to preview, purchase and download MP3s which can then be stored on any USB stick or memory card.

These kiosks, although not likely to make CDs redundant, could affect their sales as lack of packaging should in theory mean lower prices for customers. If HMV wants their music download kiosks to compete with the likes of iTunes however, a pricing war with the download giants, might be necessary. And benefit the customers, natch.

All manner of further gadgetry throughout the next-generation store, including an “interactive games hub” and a number of LCD screens will enhance the shopping experience of customers. The possibility of beanbags and comfy chairs gathered around PS3s and TVs though, could mean visiting a HMV may soon feel more like entering a youth club than a retail outlet.

London mayor Boris Johnson and MOBO Award winning singer Leona Lewis are due to officially open the store, located at the Westfield Shopping Centre in White City, on October 30th.
