Sony’s headphone range gets an overhaul with the MDR-EX500LP and MDR-EX300SL

Looking to upgrade the tatty old pair of headphones that came with free with your MP3 player? Sony might just have what you’re looking for.

The company has introduced a glut of new plugs, both wired-up and wire-free. The MDR-EX500LP / MDR-EX300SL are in-ear headphones offering ’studio quality audio’ and silicone buds for a tight fit. Hand-tuned too, if you opt for the EX500LP. Alternatively, you can opt for the EX Monitor Range, which includes the MDR-EX300SL with its large 13.5mm EX driver unit or the high-end MDR-EX700LP, which uses Sony’s ‘multi-layer diaphragm inside a 16mm driver unit’ for what it describes as the most pristine audio around.

Looking for something a little less serious? The MDR-EX33LP and MDR-EX35LP in-ear headphones are the cheap and cheerful option, with a choice of colour, silicone buds and cord adjuster. Ok, the sound isn’t as hot - but neither’s the price. Finally, there’s a wire-free option with the DR-BT160AS / DR-BT160IK Bluetooth Stereo Wireless Active stereo headphones, which offer music without the spaghetti, easy control of your MP3 player and the option to make and receive calls. There’s even an optional Bluetooth dongle for the iPod. Well…if you can’t beat ‘em, you might as well join ‘em.

All will hit the stores over October and November, prices still to be confirmed.
