Nokia shared several thoughts about the future of mobile phone hardware at The Way We Live Next conference in Espoo, Finland today, saying its Morph concept phone is only the start of different forms for phones in the next few years.

Bob Iannucci, Nokia’s Chief technology Officer, said that whilst the market is composed of just candybars, flips and folds at the present, we’ll be seeing “much more organic shapes that are tailored to what we need”.

Nokia’s seen great success with its Morph concept video, which after being uploaded to YouTube has been viewed by over two million people who’re fascinated by the nanotechnology employed in the creation of the flexible mobile which can be molded into the shape of a wristwatch amongst other forms.

Echoing our own sentiments with the creation of our 01 Phone, Iannucci claimed “this technology exists today, and it costs pennies”, so it should only be a couple of years before we see nano-technology, the use of sensors and Near Field communication in many handsets.

“What does nano-technology have to do with mobile phones? It has everything to do with mobile phones”, says Iannucci. The use of silicon nanowires, stretchable electronics and OLED screens were used in the creation of Morph, which was a “highly personal device based upon sensors, services and customisability, all real work going on in our labs”.

But where do touchscreens fit into all of this? Does Nokia consider them to be integral to the future organic forms Iannucci mentioned? They’re still being cagey about the subject, only commenting “we already have Nokia devices which have touchscreens, and tablets”, and that we will see something this year.
