Qik video-streaming service now available for iPhone 3G, but you’ll have to jailbreak it first

We’ve been using Qik for a good number of weeks at T3 Towers, live-streaming video from our Nokia N95s to the general public over here. Those in the office who are sportin’ some of those slick little iPhones have been feeling left out that they can’t broadcast videos of staff members singing Avril Lavigne songs, however they won’t be crying into their muesli for much longer, after they read this.

The unofficial application to stream video from the Apple iPhone has been rumoured for several months, however it’s just been announced that Qik has released the app - only, you’ll have to jailbreak your iPhone if you want to actually use it.

If you cast your minds back to when the iPhone 3G was first announced, you’ll remember Steve Jobs failed to mention a video camera for the handset. Locked phones, on O2 contracts, are still unable to film video and live-stream it, but if you hack it and backdate it to the old 1.1.4 firmware, you can download Qik’s new application. Obviously it’s not available in the App store, so you’ll have to go through dirtier routes to find it, but at least now you can embarrass your colleagues like we’ve been enjoying at T3.

Head over to Qik’s site now to sign up, and follow the instructions here to download the application. Enjoy!
